Shimabara/Amakusa

Yoshikawa Christian gravestones

・There are Christian gravestones in the Yoshikawa and Shitagata public cemetery along National Route 251, situated on the coastal sand dune providing a distant view of Amakusa.
・They consist of two gravestones featuring a single structure of a foundation stone and a gravestone, one gravestone that has been turned into a monument, and four gravestones left on a path of the cemetery.
・The four gravestones are all made of welded tuff, which is a rare material for Christian gravestones on Shimabara peninsula.
・The Yoshikawa area (formerly “Arakawa Village”) in which these Christian gravestones are located was the hometown of Adam Arakawa, the first martyr in the Amakusa region.
