・This is the site of the martyrdom of the Jesuit missionary Camillus Constanzo.
・In 1605, Constanzo came to Japan to engage in missionary work, but he was deported to Macau. In 1621, he returned to Japan, but in the following year he was caught on Ukujima Island and was burned at the stake on the coast of Tabira facing the Hiradoseto Strait.
・The people on Ikitsuki Island who helped Father Camillus were executed on Nakaenoshima Island.
・The site of the martyrdom of Father Camillus was developed as a historic park, which is open to the public.

[Society of Jesus] The Society of Jesus is a Catholic order approved by the Pope. It was founded by Francis Xavier and companions in 1534.

Camillus Costanzo

[Camillus Costanzo] Camillus Costanzo, a missionary of the Society of Jesus, came to Japan in 1605. He was exiled to Macau in 1614 but secretly infiltrated Japan in 1621 to preach in the Hirado area. He was captured on Ukujima Island in 1622 and was martyred by burning to death in Tabira.
