Urakami Church

・After the policy to ban Christianity and crack down on Christians were abolished in 1873, Urakami believers with their new-found freedom planned to build a church.
・Due to lack of funds, the construction of Urakami Church designed by Father Freno started in 1895, after more than 20 years, and a consecration ceremony was held in 1914 with the construction of the church left incomplete.
・In 1925, a Romanesque cathedral made of bricks, said to be the largest of its kind in East Asia, was constructed with French-made Angelus bells in its twin towers. Only 20 years after its completion, however, the cathedral was destroyed by the atomic bomb, and the Angelus bells and the twin bell towers collapsed.
・The Urakami Cathedral you see today was reconstructed with reinforced concrete in 1959. In 1980, the cathedral was remodeled with brick tiles, restoring the beautiful image of the former Urakami Cathedral.
