・This is the site of Nagasaki’s first church, Todos os Santos Church. “Todos os Santos” comes from the Portuguese term for “all saints.”
・In 1569, the church was constructed by Father Vilela on the land that Nagasaki Jinzaemon provided to Luís de Almeida.
・In 1597, a Seminário (secondary school), a Collegio (10-year college), and a metal movable-type printing house were temporarily established, attached to the church.
・In 1602 and 1605, a novitiate was opened. In 1612, the Seminário expelled from Arima moved here and remained until the order to ban Christianity was issued.
・In 1620, Todos os Santos Church was destroyed under the ban on Christianity imposed by the Edo Shogunate, and later Shuntoku-ji Temple was constructed on the site. A water well still survives as a structural remnant.
