Shogaku-ji Temple Christian gravestones

・Enmeizan Shogaku-ji Temple was built by Magistrate Suzuki Shigenari in 1646, after the suppression of the Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion.
・There are three clear Christian gravestones, which were all discovered when the main hall of the temple was demolished in 1985.
・One of the gravestones bears the inscription reading “IHS” on its end surface, together with a cross design above the letter “H,” a Christian name, and the year “1606.”
・These gravestones are the oldest such historical resources in Japan, giving a glimpse of traces of missionary work in Amakusa.

Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion

[Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion] The Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion was an uprising caused by an alliance of peasants in the southern part of Shimabara Peninsula and Amakusa Islands from 1637 to 1638. More than 20,000 people joined the rebel forces, with Amakusa Shiro as their commander-in-chief. They fought barricaded themselves in Hara Castle but were suppressed by the Shogunate forces.
