・This is the site of Suzuta Jail, where 35 Fathers and followers arrested by the Nagasaki Magistrate’s Office were imprisoned from July 1617 to September 1622.
・They were imprisoned in a very small room made of bamboo poles, just like a birdcage. It was only 6.6 m by 4.6 m in size, so the prisoners could not lie down or even move. It is said, however, that their pious prayers and hymns could be heard without interruption from the jail.
・A letter by Father Spinola sent from the jail to Europe conveyed how Christians were being persecuted in those days in Japan, making the name of Suzuta Jail infamous throughout the world.
・Two died in the jail, and 25 people, including Father Spinola, were sent to Nagasaki on September 9, 1622, and were martyred on the following day in Nishizaka. Father Franco and seven others were also martyred on September 12 in Hokobaru.
・Near the site now stands an almost 6 meter-high memorial monument with a big white cross.
