・It is said that during the time of the Shimabara Rebellion, Christians from Shimabara and Amakusa gathered in the Mine basin of Yushima to hold military strategy meetings and prepare to rise in revolt. This water basin, called a “kaji suiban,” was unearthed here, together with iron scrap and arrowheads, from farmland in the Mine area of Yushima.
・A blacksmith living in Goryo Oshima in Amakusa brought back the kaji suiban from Yushima, and donated it to Josenji Temple on Oshima Island. Legend has it that the water basin was used when smithies made weapons to be used for the Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion. In around 1931, the then principal of Yushima Elementary School and other local people asked Josenji Temple to return it to Yushima. Later, the kaji suiban was placed in Suwa Shrine at the discretion of the mayor of Yushima Village.
