・This martyrdom site is one of the Vatican’s official pilgrimage destinations.
・In 1627, 15 Christians died in martyrdom; after their fingers had been chopped off, they were thrown overboard from a boat in extremely cold weather and sank in the murky depths of the Ariake Sea.
・Of those martyrs, three sons of Paulus Uchibori Sakuemon (later martyred in Unzen Jigoku (Unzen Hell)), who served the Christian feudal lord Arima Harunobu and was a leader of Christians, were later added to the list of the 188 Japanese martyrs beatified by the Pope.
・Although the landscape of the site has changed due to a large-scale earthquake in 1792, it is considered that there was a martyrdom in a place facing the island where Father Almeida built a church in 1563.
