• In 1867, Domingo Mori Matsujiro, the leader of Hidden Christians in the Kamigoto area, migrated to Shirahama on Kashiragashima Island, set up a house, and used it as a temporary church.
• In 1887, the island’s first wooden church was built near the temporary church. Because of the aging of the wooden church, however, the stone building you see today was constructed on the site of the temporary church. The structure was built mostly out of local sandstone.
