Shimabara/Amakusa

Site of the Battle of Okitanawate

・The Battle of Okitanawate occurred on the morning of March 24, 1584, where 25,000 troops led by Ryuzoji Takanobu of Saga fought the army led by Arima Harunobu and Shimazu Yoshihisa in Okitanawate.
・In those days, Okitanawate was a chest-deep wetland, with only a single narrow path running through it. The army led by Ryuzoji, who did not know the geography of the area, was forced into a hard fight despite its large size. On the same day, Ryuzoji Takanobu was killed by Kawakami Sakyonosuke Tadakata, a warrior of the Shimazu army.
