Obitori Martyrdom Site

・Obitori is the place of the first martyrdom for faith in Christianity in the Omura Domain.
・In 1612, a ban on Christianity was issued by the Edo Shogunate, but Christian missionaries continued to stay in Japan to engage in missionary work. The crackdown on Christians was strengthened by the Shogunate and individual domains.
・Friar Pedro de la Asunción of the Franciscan Order and Father João Baptista Machado of the Society of Jesus were executed.
・Friar Pedro was caught in Isahaya, and Father Machado in the Goto Islands. Both were put in jail in the village of Kori.
・The two were beheaded on Kori Hill on May 22, 1617.
・A memorial monument now stands on their martyrdom site.
