・Nakaura Jurião was a devout Christian who lived from the Azuchi-Momoyama Period to the early Edo Period.
・He was one of the members dispatched to Rome in 1582 as the Tensho embassy on behalf of the Christian feudal lords Otomo Sorin, Omura Sumitada and Arima Harunobu.
・In the times when the Christian banishment order was issued by the Edo Shogunate, Nakaura Jurião, who was a Jesuit and a Catholic priest, continued his missionary work while hiding underground for more than 20 years. However, he was arrested in Kokura and sent to Nagasaki, and in 1633, he was sentenced to the punishment of “anatsuri” (being hung upside down over a hole) and martyred in Nishizaka.
・In June 2007, 374 years after his martyrdom, his name was added to the list of 188 Japanese martyrs beatified by the Pope.
