Nagasaki City Sotome Museum of History and Folklore

・As one of the facilities of Shitsu Bunkamura (Shitsu Cultural Village), this museum was opened in 1982 and introduces the history, folklore and culture of the Sotome area through exhibitions.
・Exhibited on the first floor were traditional farming and fishing tools used by local people in the town of Sotome, and an actual-size replica of the inside of a farmer’s house and a blacksmith’s shop. Exhibits also include farming equipment introduced by Father de Rotz and materials related to Ikeshima Coal Mine closed in 2001.
・On the second floor, panels of a chronological table of major Christian historical events involving the Sotome area and many materials related to Underground Christians are also displayed.
・In the exhibition room, visitors can see restored Jomon to Yayoi Period ruins in Sotome.

Kakure Kirishitan

[Kakure Kirishitan] Kakure Kirishitan (underground Christian) refers to those who did not return to Catholicism even after the lifting of the edicts banning Christianity in the 19th century but continued to follow the unique beliefs developed during the forbidden period.

Marc Marie de Rotz

[Marc Marie de Rotz] Marc Marie de Rotz, a missionary of the Paris Foreign Missions Society, landed at Nagasaki as a diocesan bishop in 1868. After printing doctrinal books using lithography at Oura Cathedral, he was assigned as the parish priest of the Sotome area in 1879 and engaged in various welfare activities, including establishing an aid center. He also had a profound knowledge of architecture and was involved in the construction of Shitsu Church and Ono Church.
