・The museum is housed in the former “Tsurugamine Mansion” built in 1893, as the private residence of the Matsura clan who ruled the Hirado domain during the Edo Period.
・The museum collection contains over 30,000 documents and objects, from those inherited from the ancestors of the Matsura family, whose family line has continued from the Kamakura Period, to materials related to foreign trade and Christianity. In particular, the art collection of Matsura Seizan (1760–1841), the 34th head of the Matsura family who is also known as the “Arts and Sciences Daimyo (feudal lord)” in the late Edo Period, is definitely worth a watch. His collection, including a Terrestrial Globe, a Celestial Globe, drawings, and books of the world, comprises valuable materials that provide a glimpse into Japan and the world of the Edo Period.
