Amakusa Collegio Museum

・There was Amakusa Collegio, a training school for missionaries for seven years from 1591 to 1597 in the Kawachiura area (present-day “Kawaura Town”) of Amakusa.
・The four members of the Tensho embassy to Europe lived in Amakusa Collegio after returning from Rome.
・The Amakusa Collegio Museum exhibits large numbers of materials concerning European culture imported to Kawaura after the 16th century. The museum’s main attraction is the Gutenberg printing press (replica) the Mission brought back from Europe.

[Collegio] The Collegio refers to a school for the training of clergy, founded by Valignano, the Visitator General of the Society of Jesus. It offered higher education in theology, religious studies, philosophy, natural sciences, Latin and others.
