In the wake of the discovery of Hidden Christians at Oura Cathedral, all the Hidden Christians on Kuroshima Island returned to orthodox Catholicism under the lead of missionaries in 1872. After the lifting of the ban on Christianity in the following year, the residence of the leader (“Mizukata,” who performed baptisms) of Hidden Christians was used as a temporary church. For Christians living in the southern village of Warabe, however, it was difficult to walk to attend the church in Hikazu, a village located on the western edge of the island. Christians in Warabe decided to devote a private house in the village to St. Joseph and use it as a temporary church. The temporary church existed until the first Kuroshima Church was constructed in Nakiri.
