Hotoke-no-Tani

・This site is related to the 1657 Christian persecution incident known as “Kori Kuzure” (large-scale arrests of Christians in Kori), in which 603 Christians hiding in Kori Village of the Omura Domain were found and arrested.
・This is the cave that marked the beginning of the Kori Kuzure incident.
・In the cave, Hidden Christians worshipped a painted image and prayed in secret.
・A boy named Rokuzaemon told some strange tales to people, and he was regarded as the reincarnation of Amakusa Shiro.
・A man named Hyosaku living in Kori Village in the Omura Domain revealed to his relatives a story that a child prodigy who was said to be the reincarnation of Amakusa Shiro secretly possessed a mysterious picture and preached a strange doctrine. The story reached the ears of the Nagasaki Magistrate, eventually leading to the Kori Kuzure incident.
・If you wish to visit the cave Hotoke-no-Tani, you need to prepare the minimum equipment required for walking along a steep mountain path (climbing shoes and gloves).

Amakusa Shiro

[Amakusa Shiro] Amakusa Shiro, also known by his real name Masuda Shiro, is said to have fought as the leader of the peasants' rebel forces of the Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion at the young age of only 16.

Kuzure

[Kuzure] Kuzure is the destruction of the faith-based organization of Kirishitans (Christians) due to strict control or informing during the forbidden period. The term refers to large-scale arrests of Kirishitans in an area, including the Omura county kuruze, the first to fourth Urakami kuruze, and the Goto kuruze.

Senpuku Kirishitan

[Senpuku Kirishitan] Senpuku Kirishitan (hidden Christians) lived ostensibly as Buddhists during the ban on Christianity but secretly carried on their faith.
