This relief was created in 1977 by Hidekazu Nakata, an artist from Kamigoto in the Goto Islands, under the theme of “People of the Goto Islands encountering Christianity.” This is based on the historical record that Portuguese priest Almeida, together with Japanese priest Laurentius, started their missionary work in the Goto Islands at the invitation of Uku Sumisada, the feudal lord of the Goto Islands, in 1566.
