Goto Islands

Goto Tourism and Historical Materials Museum

・The museum sits on the site of the remains of Fukue Castle, which is surrounded on three sides by the sea. In addition to the museum modeled on the castle tower, there are a high school, a cultural hall, a library, and other cultural facilities at the site.
・The museum exhibits materials and documents related to Underground Christians during the era of the ban on Christianity. Other exhibitions include stained glass of the Former Gorin Church and an organ used at Zazare Church.
・On display are also articles unearthed from remains of the Old Stone Age and the Jomon and Yayoi Periods. There is a section that introduces the nature, customs, and festivals of the Goto Islands, including traditional Baramon kites.
・In the special exhibition section, the history of the Goto Islands and local products are introduced.

[Kakure Kirishitan] Kakure Kirishitan (underground Christian) refers to those who did not return to Catholicism even after the lifting of the edicts banning Christianity in the 19th century but continued to follow the unique beliefs developed during the forbidden period.
