Site of Gokumon-jo (place where heads were exposed)

・This site is related to the 1657 Christian persecution incident known as “Kori Kuzure” (large-scale arrests of Christians in Kori), in which 603 Christians hiding in Kori Village of the Omura Domain were found and arrested.
・This is a place where the heads of the 131 martyrs in the Kori Kuzure incident were exposed for 20 days as a warning to others.
・There was a notice board announcing the names of the 131 people executed, and declaring that they had been punished by beheading because of their faith in Christianity. It is said that four common foot solders (called “ashigaru”) and two peasants stood guard there by twos in turn to prevent relatives of the martyrs from grabbing their heads back.
・On this site now stands a white statue of the Immaculate Virgin Mary to console the spirits of the martyrs in the distant past.
