Shimabara/Amakusa

Place where Amakusa Shiro boarded a boat

・In the Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion of 1637, rebel forces of over 10,000 Christians led by Amakusa Shiro attacked Tomioka Castle twice but failed to subdue it. It is said that they boarded a boat from the mouth of the Matsubara River to join up with the rebel forces in Shimabara.
・The present monument was erected by the town of Reihoku in 1973.
