It is said that the feudal lord Matsukura Shigemasa died in 1630 at Obama-onsen (Obama hot spring). According to picture maps, his mausoleum was established on a hill lying west of Shimabara Castle. Later, it was moved to Kotoji Temple, but it was lost due to the Catastrophe in Shimabara. In 1828, his grave was reconstructed. In later years, the missing grave was discovered by chance during reconstruction work from the Catastrophe in Shimabara, and the old grave was placed next to the newly built grave, both of which have been designated as historical sites by Shimabara City.
