Okinokojima Shrine on Nozaki Island was erected in 704, dedicated to the deity who protects major sea routes to China. Since ancient times, the island as a whole had been venerated as a Shinto sanctuary by shrine parishioners living in the Goto Islands. In the mid-19th century, Hidden Christians in the Sotome area migrated to Nozaki Island, considering that if they settled in the Shinto sanctuary as shrine parishioners, they would be less likely to be suspected as Christians.
