Ono Shrine is one of three shrines in the village of Ono. Of the three shrines, Ono Shrine, which housed the guardian deity of the entire village, ranked highest, and the village headman traditionally acted as its shrine priest.
According to records, the deity was transferred to Ono Shrine in 1671, indicating that the shrine had existed in the village throughout the period when Christianity was banned. Hidden Christians outwardly presented themselves as shrine parishioners who believed in Shintoism, but they secretly prayed to their own God there.
