When it was first established, Oura Cathedral was called a “Furansu dera” (a “French temple”). Inside are a great number of gifts with some connection to France. Both the statue of Mary which the Hidden Christians had asked to see during their first encounter with Father Petitjean and also the white statue of Mary by the entrance (inscribed underneath with Japanese words meaning “Our Lady of Japan”) came from France. This white statue was installed approximately 3 months after the “Discovery of Christians” in commemoration of this miraculous event.

The bronze bell, which tells people when it is time for prayer, was also a gift from France, courtesy of an anonymous Christian donor. It is shaped like a Japanese morning glory, has resounded with beautiful tones ever since the church’s foundation.
